What's Funny

_________________________________________________________________

What makes you laugh? Is it the same thing that will make me laugh? Laughter is one of the greatest gifts bestowed on mankind, but what's funny can differ greatly from person to person. Some people are funny - everybody says so, but that doesn't mean said jokester will me make laugh , or you. Looney Tunes crack me up, but they may do nothing for you. The Three Stooges have been keeping people in tears for decades, but for me, not so much - yeah I know, that's sacrilege. Get over it.. Does Jim Carrey keep your sides aching? Maybe, maybe not. I've known people who were always funny, but it wasn't what they said so much as the way they said it.

Humor in prose may be one of the most difficult aspects of humor. Anyone who's tried to be funny in an email knows that it doesn't always translate well. To write funny is a tricky gift. Do you write what you think your audience will find funny, or do you write what gives you a laugh... and hope it carries over?

Hub Pages has a wellspring of funny, smart ass writers - y'all know who you are. We love 'em! Because we love to laugh. It's therapeutic, and medical science has shown, in many studies, that laughter has numerous healing benefits.

So, what makes us laugh? Is it "Frasier" or Larry the Cable Guy?. What kind of humor floats your boat, tickles your fancy, wiggles your funny bone? Is it intellectual, silly, ironic, smart-ass, slapstick, dry? Sometimes, just a single word is funny. And sometimes, not laughing at what is clearly funny,... is funny.

Here's some words which may or may not make you chuckle. I'm gonna start the list with one of my favorites. Used in the right context, at the right moment, it's almost guaranteed to get you a laugh:

_________________________________________________________________

DONNYBROOK: A free-for-all. "Donnybrook Fair" is an annual Irish event known for its brawls.

HUCKLE MY BUFF: A brandy drink.

NUDUM PACTUM (Nude Contract): Any verbal or written agreement that is non-binding and may be avoided.

_________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

MUCKENDER: A kind of napkin or bib.

PIS ALLER: Last resort, plan B. Something done or accepted for lack of anything better.

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

STINKING HELLEBORE: Perennial frost-resistant flowering European plant, also known for its medicinal properties.

WENIS: The rough patch of skin on the outside of the elbow.

_______________________________________________________________

If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor." -Jennifer Jones

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

AMUCK (or Amok): Wildly, or lack of self-control.

KERFUFFLE: Disorderly outburst or tumult.

CAHOOTS: A partnership, or league.

_______________________________________________________________

"Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious." -Peter Ustinov

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

BEFUDDLED: Stupefied, as if by alcoholic drink.

OAF: Boob, clumsy, slow-witted.

SHPADOINKLE: Great-sounding, nonsensical word made up by Trey Parker, which can be used as a substitute for another adjective or expletive.

_______________________________________________________________

A sense of humor... is needed armor. Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life. -Hugh Sidey

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

DAFT: Silly, foolish, mad, insane.

CRAPULOUS: Suffering from gross excess in eating or drinking.

ADDLEPATED: Confused

______________________________________________________________

"A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life." -William A. Ward

______________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

FLUMMERY: Meaningless chatter.

MUNDUNGUS: Stinky Tobacco (or a Harry Potter character!)

PENNY-FARTHING: An old-fashioned bicycle with a huge front wheel.

_____________________________________________________________

"Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it." -E. B. White

Very funny. I often used the word wenis when I was a bit younger...although not in the context of the definition you gave! :)

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Really? That's funny. I'd never heard it before.

PS: I see that you're in Ohio. Small world. I was born in Cleveland, but only lived ther for two weeks.

I have seen three stooges and they are hilarious (just like Charlie Chaplin were the best in that era) Btw those baby pictures are sooooo cute. Wonderful hub and hope you are recovering well. I am going to be off from hub pages for a while. Wishing you good health bye take care.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-CW2, thanks!  I know, when I was looking for images of laughter I came across those and knew I'd found the perfect.  I'm recovering well, thank you.  And, you'll be missed.  See you when you get back?

-Joe, yeah, but centimeters is no longer a valid form of measurement.  (couldn't resist!)

I love the word Amock I think it was made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker, the youngest of the witch sisters in the movie Hocus Pocus when she jumped around on the tarmack halloring 'Amock Amock Amock'

C.W. I love to laugh and my favorite hubs and comments here on hubpages are the ones with wit and humor in them. Life has been such a b*tch that I'm possitive that I would never have made it through this far without finding the funny in everything (not always easy though)

I absolutely love the pictures

great hub again regards Zsuzsy

Funny hub.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-Thanks Zsuzsy. I've seen that movie. One of my favorite "amuck" lines is from Hugh Grant (in Two Weeks Notice), "There's something amuck with this cheesecake."

Thanks Cris.

LOL i know you are! I have a few favourites already but the mostest would be befuddled! - i mean how does befuddled look like?! LOL

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

ha-ha, good question!  I see befuddled as temporary and completely lost, in a funny way.

Daft is also a good one for a smart-ass retort: "What are you, daft?!"

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

"What are you, daft?!"

No, just addlepated due to crapulous or mundungus. But let's stop this flummery before I ran amuck!

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Dude, I do believe that ship has sailed already...

I must go work-out. Don't want to see any donnybrooks while I'm gone!

Have you seen Christoph's Dr. Seuss rhyme this morning? That made me laugh out loud. I agree with Bombeck: without a sense of humor, civilization would be lost. Great word list here -- I'll add eleemosynary (as in "Buddy, could you spare me an eleemosynary contribution?"); dipsomaniacal; hugger-mugger (Hamlet); and myocardial infarction, which I know isn't funny at all when it HAPPENS (my da died of it, after all), but I can't ever say it with a straight face.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Oh... I thought you might have been Huckling My Puff... or just being eleemosynary.

-Teresa, I actually had to look-up "eleemosynary" because I thought you'd gone daft! Sure enough, there it was. Good word. Where is Christoph's rhyme?

Cute babies and funny words. What a combo. I laughed so hard I wore off my right wenis shaking in my chair. Oh, my. Now I'll have to consider wenis replacement. And if so, maybe I can get a larger, longer lasting one. Do you know of any wenis enlargment sites?

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-Bruce, sure do! Try Viagra.com.
