Movies I Can Watch Once A Year and Never Get Tired Of
73
I love to watch movies, but when I buy a movie, I want it to be something I'm going to watch more than once - not just another in a collection to sit on the shelf and collect dust. I don't 'collect' movies. I watch them.
Like my musical tastes, my taste in movies is pretty much all over the board. I don't have any specific type or genre that I prefer or always watch. My movie prerequisites are basic: Is it fun to watch? Is it entertaining in some way - either happy, sad or even educational? Does it make me smile? Does it blow me away? Does it make me go "Wow!"?
See? Easy.
SECONDHAND LIONS Trailer
SECONDHAND LIONS (2003)
______________________________
Cast: Michael Caine; Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment; Kyra Sedgwick; Michael Kane (young Hub); Kevin Haberer (young Garth)
Musical Score: By Patrick Doyle and The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra
For me, Secondhand Lions is what movie making is all about. It's got everything: family, growing up, glory days, sword-fighting, wisdom, adventure, true love, and not to mention the incredible talent of Caine, Duvall and Osment. It's the kind of movie that you laugh and smile with - all the way through.
There's no excessive violence, colorful language, explosions, awesome effects... I enjoy all these things, don't get me wrong. But, this movie is, well, just fun.

ALIENS Trailer
ALIENS (1986)
______________________________
Cast: Sigourney Weaver; Paul Reiser; Michael Biehn; Lance Henriksen; Carrie Henn; William Hope; Al Matthews; Cynthia Dale Scott; Bill Paxton; Jenette Goldstein; Mark Rolston; Ricco Ross; Colette Hiller; Daniel Kash
Music: James Horner and The London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios
Not to be confused with "Alien," this was the sequel, which we all know can suck and come nowhere close to the original. This sequel, however, exceeded the original and raised the bar so high that sequels 3 and 4 (was there a 5, too?) just couldn't measure up. Aliens has a lot of action: An exploding space ship, well-done battle scenes with horrific creatures (Xenomorphs), the works, but what I enjoy about watching this movie are the characters. Well-defined and unique, I like these people! I enjoy watching them.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE Trailer
THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)
______________________________
Cast: Cary Elwes; Robin Wright; Chris Sarandon; Mandy Patinkin; Christopher Guest; Andre the Giant; Wallace Shawn; Peter Falk; Fred Savage; Billy Crystal; Carol Kane; Peter Cook; Mel Smith
Music: Co-written and recorded by Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
The Princess Bride is one of those movies that, once you've seen it, you'll never forget it. If you've yet to see it, I can't recommend it highly enough - if for no other reason than you will 'get it' when, during a conversation about weddings, someone suddenly exclaims "Mawwiage!" and everybody laughs. You'll be able to join the folly!

HIGHLANDER Trailer
HIGHLANDER (1986)
______________________________
Cast: Christopher Lambert; Sean Connery; Clancy Brown; Roxanne Hart; Beatie Edney; Alan North; Jon Polito
Music: Michael Kamen and Queen
Highlander The movie which inspired the series. It's the kind of movie I refer to as "A Fun Ride." It's set in the 80's, but since the main character is a Scottish immortal, there are plenty of flashback scenes of the old world and ancient battles. The sword fights are well choreographed and executed, the music is good, and the story line is easy to follow. What's not to like?

SPIDER-MAN Trailer
SPIDER-MAN 1, 2, & 3 (2002 thru 2007)
______________________________
Cast: Toby Maguire; Kirsten Dunst; James Franco; Rosemary Harris; Cliff Robertson; Willem Dafoe; J.K.Simmons; Bill Nunn; Elizabeth Banks; John Paxton; Randy Savage; Bruce Campbell; Alfred Molina; Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church; James Cromwell
Music: Danny Elfman (1 & 2), Christopher Young (3)
Spider-Man was the film that raised the bar for all super-hero/comic book movies that followed (one reviewer said, "This is what all super-hero movies want to be when they grow up."). In an uncharacteristically brave move, the studios put the necessary funds behind the making of the first Spider-Man to assure that there would be quality in directing, writing, acting, editing, music and special effects. It paid off in a big way, and Toby Maguire became an instant super star.

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
______________________________
Cast: Christian Bale; Michael Caine; Heath Ledger; Gary Oldman; Aaron Eckhart; Maggie Gyllenhaal; Morgan Freeman
Music: Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard
If one must have a swan song, Heath Ledger left us the best one imaginable with his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight. Ledger delved deep into the psyche of The Joker - the psychotic criminal - and gave us a performance that was dark, twisted, and disturbingly comical. A portrait of what The Joker might really be like... if he were a presence in the real world. Comic book movie bad guys will, from this day on, be using "Ledger's Joker" as the standard.
Vaya con dios... I will miss you forever.

SILVERADO Trailer
SILVERADO (1985)
______________________________
Cast: Kevin Kline; Scott Glenn; Kevin Costner; Danny Glover; Brian Dennehy; Linda Hunt; Jeff Goldblum
Music:Bruce Broughton
I don't particularly like westerns, but Silverado is different, and I can't really tell you why. It's got all the same ingredients as your typical western, but... it's different, you know? I talked a roommate, who didn't like westerns either, into renting Silverado, and when he finally did, he liked it, too.. Basically, it's just a fun movie to watch.` That may have something to do with high-caliber cast.
This movie also has one of my all-time favorite quotes, spoken by one of my all-time favorite actresses - Linda Hunt; "Life is what you make it. If it doesn't fit, you make adjustments."

VAN HELSING (2004)
______________________________
Cast: Hugh Jackman; Kate Beckinsale; Richard Roxburgh; David Wenham; Shuler Hensley; Elena Anaya; Kevin J. O'Connor; Alun Armstrong
Music: Alan Silvestri
Van Helsing is a modern day horror flick/action movie, complete with state-of-the-art special effects, computer-generated monsters, and an excellent cast. Van Helsing encounters Jekyll & Hyde, Frankenstein's Monster, werewolves, and vampires galore - including Dracula himself. Top-notch cinematography, directing, editing and a fantastic theatrical score make this movie a fast-paced thrill ride.

ON GOLDEN POND Trailer
ON GOLDEN POND (1981)
______________________________
Cast : Katherine Hepburn; Henry Fonda; Jane Fonda; Doug McKeon; Dabney Coleman
Music: Dave Grusin
Before I saw On Golden Pond, I'd heard it was really sad, which was odd, because the movie I watched kept me laughing all the way through. A matter of perspective? Henry Fonda bravely relates the challenges and fears of getting old with honesty and humor (while looking at a group of old family photos, he mutters, "Who-the-hell are all these people?"). It was touching to see the little boy who hides inside all of us gleefully emerge as he bonded with a fifteen year old. Katherine Hepburn was, well... Katherine Hepburn. As flawless and regally approachable as ever, and her chemistry with Fonda was a joy to watch. If you somehow haven't seen this movie yet, put it on your "must rent" list. You won't be sorry.

FORREST GUMP Trailer
FORREST GUMP (1994)
______________________________
Cast: Tom hanks; Robin Wright; Gary Sinise; Mykelti Williamson; Sally Field
Music: Alan Silvestri
What an creative idea Forrest Gump was: Shy kid, a little slow, with braces on his legs not only attends college on a football scholarship, but runs across the United States - coast to coast - multiple times. He meets living icons of the time, like JFK, rooms with Elvis, becomes a war hero, shows up at all the pivotal moments of his time, and builds his own multi-million dollar "Bubba-Gump" shrimp business. Whew! Oh Yeah, and does all this while loving the same woman he fell in love with as a child who, before dying, gives birth to his son. Way to over-achieve, Forrest!

I love Princess Bride, Decond Hand Lions and Harry Potter--all of them!! I also love Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, TinMan the series, It's A Wonderful Life (which they didn't have on here this last Christmas boo hoo), The Never Ending Story (the first on is the best), Narnia, Star Trek (all the movies--Wrath of Khan is my favorite). Those or just staters. I like some of the Black and White Movies, O think the name is The Rose of Cairo.......
You did it! YES! And you did it so well. I mean wow! You've got movie trailers, the stars, a summary, quotes...incredible job. :)
Would you believe I haven't seen half of these? No I don't live in a cave. ;) But for the ones I have seen, I agree totally. Forest Gump, On Golden Pond and a handful of the ones mentioned at the end.
If I had to make a list, I think the only one I'd include that isn't on your list is Titanic. Oh, and probably the Godzilla one with Mathew Broderick. And maybe The Patriot too. :D
NICE CW! :)
LG- I guess we can have a hub about your favorite movies too.
CW1- The more the merrier..hehe
I didn't mean to make it sound like my hub. I just wanted to let Constant Walker know or remember a few others or even watch them. No harm intended.
Thats funny just today I made similar request: http://hubpages.com/request/9971/best
Good list Constant Walker. You have great taste in movies - Princess Bride and Golden Pond are superb movies! Never seen second-hand lions, so may have to find that one.
I have watched Excalibur and Conan the Barbarian many times.
Also, Watership Down - guaranteed tears at the end :(
On Golden Pond- Maybe every ten years?
Silverado- a marginally entertaining western
Spiderman- If I have to see part 3 again, I'll puke.
Robin Hood? I was already tortured once by Costner's hack of a British accent
How about Scarface, Good Fellas, Crimson Tide, Pulp Fiction, Desperado, Nacho Libre, the Jerk, Blazing Saddles, The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, Dance with Wolves, Rocky....
I just read your Godzilla comment too!! Were you smokin' the ganja then?
I forgot about Danes With Wolves! That was a good movie. I liked Merlin and have the movie and do watch it many times a year, Mists of Avalon and anything about King Arthur interests me.
Keeping the Faith??!!!???
lol
Wow, great list! I would add "Amadeus" and "Little Shop of Horrors" and...God, now I'm going to have to make my own list. There's so many! Thanks CW!
Fantastic idea for a hub. My once a year movies include, All 3 Godfathers, Pulp Fiction, Gladiator and Rocky Horror to name a few.
Pam,. I like those too. We all could make our own hub on this, but we just needed CW to get our brains started in remembering. P)
I made that request about 5 hours back for the personal Top 20 movies of all time.
RFLMAO!!!!!
Constant you just gave me an idea for a hub.
CW, You are such a GUY! But I love that you have such an ecclectic list. And that there's at least a couple on your list that someone relates to. And I love your inclusion of one line from each flick. Great hub!
Aside from the requisite Christmas flicks, I have a few that I like to pull out of the CD case at least once a year. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is #1 for sure. "Pride & Prejudice" (Keira Knightly version), "Master & Commander" "The Firm" (in addition to young Tom Cruise and Jeanne Tripplehorn + Gene Hackman, the score is to die for), "Taking Lives" and "Die Hard" (first one). I also could watch "Liar, Liar" and "Napoleon Dynamite" every month and still laugh.
I just read that you watched Hairspray. Which version-- the older one with Divine, Deborah Harry and I Rikki Lake as the main character? Or the new one with John Travolta as Edna Turnblad? He does such a great job!
well what about "Lion King"?.."Sound of Music"? "Mrs. Doubtfire""Planes Trains and Automobiles" ? and "Romancing the Stone" I actually don't watch many movies...but do manage a few and you did a great job here my friend...makes me want to hide...am so far behind...LOL G-Ma :o) Hugs & Peace (P.S. my deceased younger sister and her hubby were both extras in "Blazing Saddles") whooo heeee
Looks like some kind of secretion. Yeah; but secreted from what?
I say we blast off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure!
Whaddya mean they cut the power? They're animals!
and Die Hard contains my favorite movie line of all time -- Yippie Cay-Yay, Motherfucker! (whcih I once used as an illustration of code switiching when I was teaching the History and Development of the English Language.)
Sorry. But every mention of those movies elicits the same responses from me. Plus the first Terminator -- but then, I've always been a sucker for a love story.
I have netfilx, I have to add some of these movies to it!!
Constant, I think you might have forgotten Willow, This is a must see for me as well as the movie about the group of college kids having a Saturday detention, as I get older I find that certain times I have a name block.
Great Hub
Nice list! I love Princess Bride! I too would add on Breakfast Club, and Labyrinth : )
Thanks, Another one or two came to mind "The Bridges of Madison County", Phantom of the Opera.
Great list, CW! Rocky Horror, Princess Bride, Grease, and Ferris Bueller are all among the movies I've watched WAY too many times, and would still gladly sit through if the opportunity presented itself. :)
Have you seen I Heart Huckabees? That's another one of my favorites. And Bottle Rocket. And Harold and Maude! I love that movie. And Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Splash, Roxanne, Big, The Royal Tenenbaums, Ghostbusters, and American Beauty.
I haven't seen some of the ones you suggested, but I plan to add a couple to my Netflix. Nicely done!
Great Hub, Rocky Horror, Labyrinth, Phantom of the Opera, all the Harry Potter series, All the Batman movies. Princess Diaries, Meet The Robinsons, just to name a few.
For an all-day treat, Air America followed by Lethal Weapon 1, 2 & 3. The timeframe in AA could easliy be the years before Mel Gibson's character in the LW series became a cop.
My other watch-any-times: Pride & Prejudice (Knightley version), Electric Horseman, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (who cares that KC can't talk like a Brit), How To Lose A Boyfriend in 10 Days (or something like that).
Till Death us do Part, an oldie British Movie. The Fox, adaptation of DJ Lawrences book. Ryans Daughter
I loved the costumes in VAN HELSING, and my children are mad about Spiderman. Personally I didn't like Spiderman 1 and 2, the 3 is much more better. I must like characters with a dark side ;-)
My movie tastes are a little different than most people, but certain ones I can watch again and again are The Bounty (1984), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) because I am a huge mutiny on the Bounty historian buff. The movies deviate from the true history of the event, but I still love watching the storyline and the scenery is beautiful. Other favorite movies, some new and old are The Namesake, Sixteen Candles, Yours, Mine, and Ours, Dirty Dancing, The Wedding Date, 50 First Dates, Wedding Crashers, The Trouble With Angels, Knocked Up, All The Vacation movies, A Gentleman's Agreement, It Happened One Night, Gone With The Wind, and pretty much any classic black and white movie. My new obsession is with pre Hayes code movies 1930-1934 because these are more spicy, but still have the white and black allure.
Hi,
My list includes Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Fried Green Tomatoes, Rails and Ties, The Bucket List, Pretty Woman, ET, The Money Pit, Hold That Ghost (B&W), On Golden Pond, Thelma and Louise, American Pie and finally, all Shirley Temple and all Betty Davis movies.
Constant, great hub son, but who among us can forget The Last of The Mohicans? You do have a great list there, I might add. Good job. And talk about a swan song for Henry Fonda. wow.
I wonder if you like Forrest Gump so much because he is a runner and you are constantly walking....hmmm? I like these movies and watch them every year since they came out:
Lord of War (Best Nic Cage Movie Ever), Poolhall Junkies (Walken Rules), Cruel Intentions, Mamma's Boy (One of the funnies Movies Ever), School Of Rock (Jack Black...nuff said) and The Rundown (The Rock is badass in this movie)
C.W. I loooooove movies. It's inconceivable that you like these movies... of the ones off your original list I own about 90%. I recently added the three 'Bourne' movies to my fave list and Independance day. Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler... my list is just tooo long but the one movie very few people seem to know about is 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness' with Ingrid Bergman and Curt Jurgens man-o-man every year at least twice
Great hub on a subject that everyone has an opinion to...
regards Zsuzsy
While I was drifting off to sleep last night, I thought of a few other movies my sisters and I never got tired of (I won't quit until you add one to your list!). Just kidding... a little ;)
Here they are: Big Business, She's Having a Baby, Return of the Jedi, The Fifth Element, Annie, Cocoon, All of Me, Defending Your Life, Clue, Maid to Order, and a few others that people have already mentioned (especially E.T.).
Thanks for writing such a fun hub!
spiderman is my fav
Love all of those - was You Got Mail up there? One of my absolute favourites! Great hub, Constsnt Walker!
Constant, you have loads on your list that are also on mine. I love the Princess Bride (You killed my father, Prepare to die!) and the Rocky Horror Show (I see you quiver with anticip ation!) One of my all time favourites is A Knights Tale with Heath Ledger, and I also love The Blues Brothers, and Blue Juice is another classic. Great hub!
Rob Roy was a stretch but a great vehicle for Liam.
Cosntant
Like those who came before me (LOL) i am predisposed to volunteer my own list but I am reminded that this hub is about the movies you can watch once a year and never get tired of and not the movies i wish you'd watch once a year and never get tired of, too! That said, nice list! But where's...? :D
Great list, CW. I haven't seen a few of them, but most of them I either have on VHS or I've at least watched.
I absolutely LOVE The Princess Bride, I think it's hilarious! As is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Any man who likes Rocky Horror is A-OK in my books! Also, Braveheart, Grease, Amadeus, Van Helsing, and a bunch more. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see Bram Stoker.
I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you on Ferris Beuller, though I admit that may be because when my kids were younger they watched it about 4 million times in a month.
If I comment on all of these, this comment will be a mile long, so I'll stop.
Great list and reviews, CW!
Did you ever see 'The Draughtman's Contract'? Never could figure it out. I'd watch 'My Cousin Vinny' and the 'Stakeout' movies with Richard Dreyfuss again but I'm not big on watching movies again except maybe stuff by the Coen brothers. Great list by the way.
I grew up with cable and watched many movies, but I also read. It was all about balance, but I love movies now because of it.
I like old movies. I watch Philadelphia Story at least once a year. And, of course, Casablanca.
For newer movies, I watch Love Actually every Christmas now.
Constant
Of course i;m just joshing (is this word still used? LOL) besides Countrywomen made a request - my top 20 alltime favourite flicks so... and i'm pretty much in agreement with your choices :D
And I already like Van helsing and the dark knight.. may be I beong to the horror category.. lol.. Nice hub and good all-time fav movies collection..
This is a fun hub CW! I keep coming back to see what other people's favorites are. I have quite a list going of ones that I want to see now.
I have a few secret favorites. I think Goldentoad mentioned one of them...Nacho Libre. I know it didn't go over big, but there's something about that movie that really makes me laugh no matter how many times I see it. Then there's The Jerk, I've seen that at least 100 times. I'm slightly embarassed to admit this next one, but there's something about The Karate Kid that makes me watch everytime it comes on TV. :D Wax on wax off, paint the fence Daniel-son...lol!
You just reminded me to watch The Princess Bride again. Thank you.
Robinhood- Men in tights. Everytime I see it I laugh so hard! I love Cary Ewles!Shrek is good too.
you forgot Gone With The Wind.
I was looking for your latest hub when i happened upon this one again. :) Also, I remembered another goofy one that I can watch once a year...Malibu's Most Wanted. :D
Thanks, I just finished up reading and commenting.
It's funny, but I was just asking someone yesterday who that actor was because I didn't know him at all. I have no clue how his other movies are, but perhaps give it a try. It's about a guy/Jamie who thinks he's a black rapper. You might get some chuckles even though you don't like him. ;)
Thanks, CW! I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment now. How about The Golden Child? Or should I just quit while I'm ahead? ;)
What??? That was such a good movie! I was very young when I formed that opinion, though, so maybe it isn't as great as I remember. :) How about Back to the Beach? Or Short Circuit?
Back to the Beach is pretty fun, I recommend checking it out. If for no other reason then to see PeeWee Herman's cameo. :) Come to think of it, I guess it was geared more toward kids since my sisters and I liked it a lot more than our parents did. My favorite line from Short Circuit was probably "Your mama was a snowblower!"
Hi CW, I see you've received lots of suggestions to your list! Further to an earlier exchange this morning (or was it last night?) about women's sandals, I would have to add my favorite men in drag movie, "Some Like It Hot." Matthau/Lemmon and Monroe. Just in time for St. Valentine's Day (and the massacre). If you don't know it, check it out!
I agree with your choices, my man, though I have never seen Highlander or Van Helsing. I don't have too much desire to see On Golden Pond again any time soon, though it is an excellent film. I'm going to try to catch the one's I haven't seen. If it appeals to you, it should appeal to me.
Good work putting this together and sifting through all the information!
Hi Constant, I have not watched half of these yet..where have I been? LOL Thanks for the list. :D Happy hearts day to you my friend.
Great hub.I must admit I saw Rocky Horror Picture show around 15times in my lifetime.Van Heisling I could watch that 100times just to even watch Hugh Jackman,he is soooo dishy. The Highlander,I love Christopher Lambert, could watch that over and over.Dances With Wolves,I have seen more than once too, just love Kevin Costner.Grease yes great one,I jived to that maybe 12 times or more.I even went out and bought some of those skin tight pants like Olivia after seeing that. It's a great list Constant, well done, browsing through your list I have been guilty of watching a lot of them on many occassions.I dont think you have Titanic on your list.My god I am up to 14times on that one,on those rainy days, and I still cry
Great hub. As someone who loves movies I love your list, even if I don't like all the same ones you like. Keep writing.
It looks like our tastes in movies are similiar, I'll have to check out Second Hand Lions. Its the only one one your short list I haven't seen. I'm gonna have to look at your long list closer. Sometimes I have to see the movie jacket to remember the movie. My list would of course have a few romances added like Pride and Prejudice.
I just bought Planet Earth at Costco, damn that was expensive!
Damn! Ya $50. I got screwed eh?
The Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies!!! Glad to see it on the list!!
Nope, not at all!!! Remember, never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!!! LOL!!
Great Lens I enjoyed it and have bookmarked you.. I'll be back!
Great layout, nice presentation of your favorites. Nice idea to make a list as well.
I love the movie "What About Bob". I never tire of it. I'm not sure why. Now it is a Thanksgiving tradition, one I started and that has been accepted with open arms in my family. It's always pulled out and watched between snacks and Thanksgiving dinner. We anact scenes from it all year long and crack up every time. It just never gets old.
By the way, love the photo after the comments "Wanna dance, or would you rather just suck face?" Excellent movie!
Yaaaay you listed Princess Bride. That would also be on my list of movies I can watch over and over again. It's funny though because all the movies that had that WOW factor for me are the ones i'd have to watch once every 10 years. As far as movies you can watch over and over, I think you covered what they'll do for you: they're fun, make you think, or touch you emotionally in some way. With that said I am a sucker for watching The Sister Act movies. Frankly any movie with a good song number is going to be one i watch over and over and over and over again.
As for the make you think kind, I felt that way when i first saw Pleasantville. I had to try to figure out what reason made people go into color.
And emotionally speaking I would say The Never Ending Story...actually it could go on the make you think list too. The saddest part of the movie to me isn't even what happened to Artax (though good lawd that was sad). Actually what kills me is the scene where the rock biter says "they look like strong hands don't they"
Great post..Nice
I could watch The Lion King over and over again; it's such a great movie. I've seen the stage version over a dozen times too!

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies too. I have to catch up with some of the other movies in the list. Thumbs up for nice recommendations.
