The Oscars - HubPages Style!

RESULTS

We did pretty well! We matched eight wins, and had a 3-way tie for best makeup, so I'm not quite sure what that means. If you notice that it looks like the song from WALL-E, "Down To Earth," won here on HP, that's because I voted for it after "Jai Ho" had already won. Doesn't count. So, here's the winners the HubPages votes matched - Thank You to everyone who played along - it was fun:

  • Best Original Screenplay: MILK
  • Best Costume Desing: THE DUCHESS
  • Best Supporting Actor: HEATH LEDGER (The Dark Knight)
  • Best Sound Editing: THE DARK KNIGHT
  • Best Original Score: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
  • Best Song: "JAI HO" (Slumdog Millionaire)
  • Best Director: DANNY BOYLE (slumdog Millionaire)
  • Best Actress: KATE WINSLET (The Reader)

The 81st Annual Academy Awards will be held February 22, 2009, and I'll probably be watching. I like award shows, always have. MTV used to have thee best award shows - bar none.

Lately? ...not so much.

I thought it would be kinda fun to let HubPages members vote for the nominees and see how close we get to picking the actual winners. The official Academy voting committee is made up of people from the entertainment industry. Can you say "biased"?

It should be interesting - come Oscar night - to compare the results.

Great idea! :D I can't wait to see how these votes compare to the 'commitee' picked winners. ;)

Thanks Pam! I already know I'll be watching with this hub up - comparing. Should be fun.

Ecellent idea Cons; I did not vote as I just don't take interest in such things, like the movies and all that, but, well you understand.

Nice Hub, but I can honestly say that I have passed yet another year without seeing a nominated movie. (I've been holding a grudge against the Academy for dissing Earnest Goes To Camp, way back when.)

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Uh... no comment. The only ones I've seen, so far, are The Dark Knight (phenominal) and WALL-E (very good). There are still still several more I plan to rent - I don't like movie theaters.

Hi CW,

Good idea, really!

I guess I will vote only for those I have been able to see, the Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire in my case.

Thanks for reading, Ridd. Haven't seen Slumdog, but I plan to.

Of course I've had coffee. I woke up about seven hours ago. Online betting? Nah, I don't gamble.

Hi G-Ma. Don't you have Netflix? It's the only way to go!

Sorry,Sidd. I did know that, but, I always type horribly in the comments. Even if I proof read them. I don't get it...

Thanks Jama. Yep, that's what I'm looking forward to. I would be interesting to know how many people who voted here have this page open on Oscar night.

Constant Walker profile image

Thanks Jim.  I was hoping readers might see it that way.

RGaf, it's different already - with the few votes that are here now - than I would have thought. And the race for Leading Actress is a three way neck-n-neck.

William F. Torpey profile image

William F. Torpey Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

Sorry, CW, but I know few of the actors and I've seen none of the movies. In fact, I've sworn off going to the movies. As I mentioned in another comment on another hub a while back, I saw three movies a year or two ago and wanted to walk out on all of them because of the psychedelic scene changes that make the movies virtually impossible to watch. I have dozens of old (mostly 1930s/1940s) movies on videotape that I enjoy watching without getting vertiginous.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

That's OK, William. You would probably like Netflix - if you'd be interested in getting a DVD player. The library is huge, from the very oldest to the just-realised. And you might even find a few new ones you like!

Wow C.W. that list must have taken quite a while to compile. Great list the only ones I wasn't able to vote on were the Foreign Films and The shorts.

You did a great job. I will be interesting to see how we all voted compared to the real votes.

Hope you're well regards Zsuzsy

Fun hub Constant Walker. I enjoyed voting for a couple of the categories that I recognized :).

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Thanks Zsuzsy. I'd like to take the credit for compiling the list, but can't. I simply went to the Oscars website and found all the nominees. I agree, it will be fun to compare the results on Oscar night. And yes, I'm well - thanks for asking. You?

Thanks Sweetie. Like Jim said, above: "Audience participation makes for a fun hub." Are you going to watch the Oscars and compare voting results?

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

Just came by to check who/what's winning. I guess it's turning out to be a popularity contest :D

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

I thought that at first, too, but new developments keep surprising me. Slumdog Millionaire was especially popular, but I've heard it was very good - and it's been getting a lot of votes here.

I expect Heath Ledger and anything to do with The Dark Knight to win because of his death, but I've seen that movie (I own it!) and anything he, personally, gets is well-deserved. His performance as Joker was incredible. He definitely stole that movie. I've been watching his work since "Roar," and frankly would not have thought him capable of such a high-caliber performance.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Also weird: Hellboy is winning for makeup, but he's basicly wearing a prosthetic-type suit. The makeup in both Dark Knight and Benjamin Button were MUCH better.

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

Benjamin Button will win BP. The academy is not ready yet to give a "small" movie that kind of prestige - but they'll make up for it by giving Danny Boyle the nod for directing.

It's gonna be Mickey Rourke - the academy loves comebacks. Meryl Streep for Best Actress - enough with that  Susan Lucci-like curse! Besides, Kate Winslet won the Best Actress in the Globes for another movie and not for the Reader (though she got the supporting trophy for it)

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

I think Frost/Nixon will get BP. And Mickey Rourke's performance looks good, too.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the results here (I know I've said this before) compare with Oscar night.

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

I stand with Benjamin Button - the Oscars loves surprises but not when a critically acllaimed, commercially successful, star-powered Hollywood movie is on the line (it's a rarity *wink*) :D

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

True, but with Frost/Nixon there's the added factor of a comeback - Frank Langella. Also, it's been getting a lot of showbiz buzz. I really think it'll win BP. But, you never know.

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

But I know! LOL I would not consider Langella's turn as a comeback, he's too old for that sort of thing besides, he never went anywhere! Guess we'll see about this come Oscar night! :D

foxility profile image

foxility 3 years ago

I have not seen many of the movies listed except DarkK. They all look like good picks though.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

I know! He's been busy all along, but the media are calling it a "comeback." And, no such thing as "too old."

Thanks for stopping by, Fox. Did you vote on the ones you've seen? I think most people are doing that.

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

So how do you say "too old" when it's what you mean to say?

goldentoad profile image

goldentoad 3 years ago

I have seen many of the movies except Frost/Nixon and Milk. I got to be in the right frame of mind I think to see both, but I'm sure I'll see them before Oscar night. I have to say Benjamin Buttons is in a league of its own and none of the other movies I've seen will stand the test of time like that one. I am burnt out over Slumdog millionaire getting so much props, I think it s really good movie, but I would say Dark Knight is better.

I also think Brad Pitt should get best actor, because working with that make-up and special effects the way he did, was amazing.

and Robert Downey competing against Heath Ledger thats a real tough one. I had to go with Downey, I just couldn't stop laughing at him everytime he spoke.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-Cris, I think age is relative, and a state of mind. And besides, was Tony Bennett "too old" when he made his comeback? What about the actor who plays "Ducky" on NCIS? He hadn't been on a popular show for about 40 years and is easily in his 60's or 70's. Suddenly, he's made a comeback. "Too old" is one of those things I don't believe in... right up there with "never" and "impossible." Thanks for voting,

Golden. Your comments are exactly why comparing the results on Oscar night will be so interesting. You voted according to merit, talent and what impressed you. I doubt the Academy voters will be as honest. I'm sticking with Ledger's performance (and I would do this if he were still alive), but, to be honest, I haven't seen Downey Jr's yet. I love funny, but I can't imagine it overshadowing the raw brilliance I saw in Dark Knight.

Cris A profile image

Cris A Level 2 Commenter 3 years ago

Constant

LOL Okay I got your point and I actually realize that I share the same views. i guess "too old" was not exactly the right term I should've used! By the way, i made a hub a couple of months back on who/what should have won the Oscar. http://hubpages.com/hub/stealing-the-oscar-or-whow i really want to know what you think - at the risk of being accused as promoting my hubs which I don't do. Actually you can delete this post as soon as. Thanks :D

The last movie I saw in a theatre was Ghengis Blues, about 5 years ago. But I'm all for Micky Rourke winning something! Fun to look over the list. Thanks!

And if you haven't seen Ghengis Blues, you are missing out on a great cult movie. Tuvan throat singing, high level phyisics and bongo drumming. Oh, yeah!

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-Bruce, I might have to check that out. My last theater experience was Queen of the Damned, and my friends had to drag me to that. And I just now saw Hancock (excellent!). I'm definitely a Netflix kinda guy...

PS: Tell Cris A he's shameless before you leave... ;-)

thanks for being a good friend, Constant. you'll always be in my heart :D

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

lol - I do what I can.

Actually, leaving a link in comments isn't all that terrible, if it has to do with the hub it was left on. I've done it a couple of times when I think the writer might be interested in a story I've done which is similar. Yours was, and I was clearly interested. It's not like it was a link to something you were trying to market to me.

-Blonde, ya it was fun! I had this page up and was taking notes while watching.

-MM, We got a lot of the winners right! I'm going to post 'em after answering these comments.

-Shirley, sure you could. I hadn't seen them all either. I didn't vote until right before the show. Where there were ties I voted to break the tie - all except one: I didn't check best makeup first and my vote made it a 3-way tie.
