1955 was two years before I was born, but when my mother gave me a list of quotes from that year, I knew I had to share them.

___________________________

I'll tell you one thing, If things keep going the way they are it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.

Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2,000 will only buy a used one.

If cigarettes keep going up in price I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is rediculous.

Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?

If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00 nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon? Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail haircuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.

I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies anymore. Ever since they let Clark Gable get away with saying "damn" in Gone With the Wind, it seems every new movie has either "hell" or "damn" in it.

I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the Moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call "astronauts" preparing for it down in Texas.

I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

It's too bad things are so tough now-a-days. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more. Those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.

I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

There is no sense in going to Lincoln or Omaha any more for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel.

No one can afford to be sick any more. At $35 a day in the hospital, it's too rich for my blood.

If they think I'll pay fifty cents for a haircut, forget it.

Oh yes, I remember it well-- even mentioned  an accident I had with my Dad's '55 Buick in my latest hub.

Of course, with all of the prices mentioned, we have to remember that people who made $2,000 a year were doing well in that year.

Thanks for reading, Rochelle. I know, with our current salaries we'd be wealthy!

I paid $2,000.00 for my first new car, a volkswagen and it cost me $2.00 to fill the tank.  I made about $100.00 a week working full time.  I'm afraid to say that I helped to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.  Great hub, loved it :)

This is funny and interesting. My great aunt used to have an old Sears catalog from the early 1900's I used to love to look at it and see the different things that was sold and the cost of things. It's funny how much things change.

C.W.! The more things seem to change the more they stay the same. Great hub.

Thanks for sharing these quotes

Great remebering when, there Constant, I had an eye opener the other day. I had stopped smoking 5 years ago, found out that a pack of twenty sells for R21,00. That shook me as when I first started work Cigarettes cost 21 cents, petrol was 21 cents a gallon.

The times thet are a changing.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Dottie-  That's OK.  Some of our best products are foreign.

Gwendy-  It would be fun to look through that.

Zsuzsy- Plus ca change, plus c'est pareil. (Learned that from a RUSH song)

Thanks, Rodney-  When I 16, cigarettes were 75 cents a pack.

Thank you all for checking it out.  Thought you'd enjoy it.  I got a "Duplicate" warning immediately... duh!  But, that's OK.

I love this sort of thing. Time capsules can be quite a bit of fun, so I thought maybe someone should make a Hubpages time capsule for the year 2008. Ask hubbers different opinions about this year, just a thought.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Hey Sweetie, that IS a good idea. Let me think on it...

Jonno.Norton 3 years ago

Great hub man, I was just reading the other day that the american dollar has declined in value over 1,000% since the 1920s, inflating prices to what we pay today apparently.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Hey Jonno, good to hear from you! Ya, we are all extremely wealthy compared to "way back then." But, I'm still just not feelin' wealthy at the moment...

Thanks for stopping by.

WOW!! Nice trip down the memory lane. Btw how is your health now? Hope you are recovering well.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Stable, and thank you for asking, Country. I'm currently learning about exercises for BPPV (a symptom of inner ear injury) and the "Epley" maneuver. Encouraging! I would be jazzed if I could correct the damage with exercise... as apposed to surgery.

Constant Great Hub. As you Know I really enjoy these "call back the past" things.

Thoroughly enjoyed your hub but I am at least 10 years older and things were even cheaper then.

countrywomen profile image

countrywomen 3 years ago

CW- I also pray that you recover permanently without too much pain whether be it through exercize or surgery (why are you afraid of surgery?).

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Thanks, Sixty. I have no actual memories of any these times, but have heard talk about them here and there, and the comparisons to current times are fun.

Thanks, Country. I mucho appreciate that. I'm not actually afraid of surgery, I guess, if it's necessary. But there are ALWAYS risks associated with surgery - no matter how routine - and I would much prefer to have a degree of control over my own recuperation through therapeutic exercises. It's empowering.

Wouldn't you?

countrywomen profile image

countrywomen 3 years ago

CW- I have had a good health so far(touch wood). I agree surgery is a calculated risk but still if once and for all if the problem is removed than I wouldn't hesitate to go for it. If its not serious you can see the progress for a while and decide whether to go for surgery or the present progress is good enough. Anyway since Iam not an authority on medicine I wouldn't trust my instincts entirely but would get second or third opinion to validate the findings of the doctors. Good luck and may you have a speedy recovery. May God bless you with health, wealth and happiness.

Happy Thanksgiving.

That brought back memories - strange how things change and still stay the same. I'm sure we tell our children and granchildren the same thing, beginning with "When we were young..." Those were the days, my friend :)

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Thanks Country, and Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! I will have to wait to hear what the specialist says before making any decisions. So all of this is just hopeful speculation.

Thank you, Shalini, for stopping by. Our favorite has always been, "When I was young we had to walk to school, in the snow, and it was uphill, BOTH WAYS! Funny. It's ironic because now I prefer walking to anything else.

Interesting stuff Constant. I don't remember 1955, but it sounds a whole lot like me talking about college kids in my town in 2008. It reminds me of my own negativity about current issues and the future. It must be a sign that I'm getting old.

CW- Hope you have made some progress and are in a postion to take a decision whether to go for a surgery or not by now. I pray for you and hope you make steady recovery soon. I wish you health, wealth and happiness. May you have good times with your family/friends in these holidays.

Hi Constant,

These quotes are great. I was born in the sixties, so it's a bit before my time, but I identify with the sentiment. Everything keeps going up. You don't notice it too much when you're young, but when you look back over twenty plus years, you can certainly see the difference!

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

-Sschilke, ha-ha. I can sympathize. It's difficult to to be positive and look on the bright side of current events, but I think it's important to do so... for so many different reasons.

-Lgali, thanks for checking it out.

-Thanks, C.S. Aren't they great? But, I can't take "credit for the dig" (pretty clever, eh?! ;-). They were sent to me by a cousin. I blatantly stole them and turned them into a hub...

-Shalini. Sometimes we'd get into it and throw in stuff like, "...and there were holes in my shoes... and the roads were covered with broken glass!" then just for giggles wrap it up with, "And we were THANKFUL do have that!"

-FCW (female CW) Thank you very much, and I return the wish for you and yours. My recovery is going very well, thank you for asking, and I'll know on the 12th whether inner ear surgery is necessary, or not. But, during all the waiting, I've been getting so much better, I can't imagine surgery being necessary. If the specialist says it is, she'll have to do some serious convincing as to WHY.

-Hi Amanda. I was born in 1957, so I don't remember anything from the fifties either - I barely remember the sixties, and most of the seventies are lost in a psychedelic fog... But I HAVE come to understand why elders say, "Youth is wasted on the young." Thanks for reading!

$35 a day in the hospital? At those rates, I'd move in. Nice hub, CW. Haven't been writing many myself lately, but I intend to be more proactive. Hope my intentions turn into actions. Anyways, Happy holidays, keep the hubs coming!

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Wow, J-Roo! Haven't heard from you in months. Thought you might be globe-hopping. I didn't think I would be writing much lately, either, (got FU-ed-up last August, see "I'm No Superman") but I have been, anyway. Self-therapy, I think.

Happy holiday to you, too! ...And very good to hear from you again.

Constant Walker, I was born the same year you were!! I do hope that you get your problem fixed. I had a terrible ear ache a long time ago and by the time the ER actually saw me (some four hours later) I already had my ear drum preforated and there was nothing they can do about it. It's not to bad, just not perfect hearing out of that ear.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker Hub Author 3 years ago

Thanks, LG, but it's inner ear danage. The Epley maneuver helped the vertigo. but the other symptoms remain. I may have to live them...
